SERMON NOTES

A powerful church with a heart of servanthood

  • You may not be gifted, shy, introvert, may not be able to sing
  • But there is a gift that we can release for the body of Christ
How can I serve somebody?
How can I serve the Lord?

Empowering each person in the church when they ask themselves this question: How can I serve the Lord?

John 13 (Jesus washing the disciples feet)
  • Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve
  • Jesus served as an example for us
  • All of his disciples are asking, "Who's going to wash my feet?"
  • Jesus begins to wash his disciples feet and Peter refuses to be washed
  • Even the one who was going to betray him
  • After he washes all their feet, v. 14 - So now you also should wash one another's feet
  • If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
  • Sometimes I (Young) wash other peoples feet so that people wash my feet back
  • We are called to serve one another in the power of the Gospel

It's an upward climb to live out the gospel as a servant
  • In the modern day church, the leader's are supposed to be served upon…but leaders should be serving others
  • Are we going to really live out the calling that Jesus calls us to?
  • Within 8 minutes of visiting a church, people decide if they will return
  • It's a battle
    • Triple Threat of how servanthood is being attacked:
      • Consumerism
        • We have a consumer mentality and we say, "What's in it for me?"
        • How to battle that? Ask the question, "How do I serve someone?"
        • When you begin to look to God and look at others, you notice others and serve them
          • Ie: Can I pray for you? How did you know? It was written over your face.
      • Entitlement
        • "With all my service, I'm entitled to something."
        • Somewhere down the line, we feel that God owes us something
        • People stop serving hard because they are not getting the recognition or "payback" they are expecting
      • Selfishness
        • We are infatuated with us
        • We want to get what's for us
        • Hebrews 12
        • I want to receive grace so that I can serve with the joy of the Lord
  • Wash one another's feet - This is not natural.  It must be super natural.
    • When you manufacture it, you can do it for a while, but you cannot continue
    • Our heart must cry out, "I need You! I need You!"  Dependent!
  • Serving is supernatural. If you want to serve people, You better have Jesus.
  • Out of the overflow, ministry happens
    • They were blessed before they heard the sermon
    • Van driver brought revival
  • There is stuff that you think doesn't matter.  If you serve with the heart of Jesus, it matters
  • Instead of saying, WIIFM, what can I do to bless the heart of others
I have come to serve. Not to be served.
