Outreach Ministry
The "Doorway" ministry at ICC is a volunteer-based English language ministry in which volunteers will be equipped to provide weekly one-on-one tutoring to non-native speakers in the surrounding community to help them learn some of the basics of the English language and practice speaking conversationally. It is a ministry that was originally founded by ICC over 7 years ago and re-launched in the fall of 2019.
Who can participate as a volunteer? You do not need any teaching or language experience to participate in this ministry. Any adult with a a grasp of the English language and a heart to love and serve others can help! A training session led by Liz Mathew will be held at church on Sat, Sept 14th (9am-noon) and all the resources you need will be provided to allow for a mutually enriching experience. An experienced ELL site supervisor will be available at every session to provide support as needed. If you are unable to attend the training but would still like to take part in being a volunteer please let Pastor Peter know.
What do we ask of our volunteers? Volunteers are asked to commit to one semester at a time, which will be one session a week over the course of 8-9 weeks. We project the fall semester to begin in October and run through early Dec 2019 (with a break on Thanksgiving week). To allow as many volunteers and students to participate as possible, we hope to offer two separate sessions on both a weeknight evening (likely Wednesday evenings) as well as Saturday morning. However this will depend on student needs and volunteer availability. Volunteers will be given all the training and resources needed to effectively teach/converse with their assigned student for each session.
What if I can’t commit to be a tutor but would like to help? We can always use your support in prayer - prayer in finding students in need in our community as well as the volunteers to serve them. We also hope to use this ministry to teach one-off seminars on different life skills such as providing guidance on legal documents, navigating the health care system, personal finance, and couponing, so if you have any expertise in any practical areas that may be helpful to those in our community and are willing to help please let Pastor Peter know.
Why is this outreach ministry important to ICC? There are many ways to reach out to our communities but we have felt a particular burden to find opportunities in which we can both meet a real felt-need and also build relationships which would allow us to effectively share the love of Christ and communicate the hope of the gospel. We believe this particular outreach ministry meets those objectives and will grow our hearts in loving others and serve those in need in our community. Regardless of whether you can serve as a volunteer, please help us get the word out to anyone you know who might benefit. See the promotional page and flyer HERE.
How do I get involved or find out more?
